The government has produced a new guidance document for employers

(Other versions of the guidance are available on the Home Office website’s section on Preventing illegal working)

The guidance recommends that from 1st May 2004 employers should follow certain steps for every new potential employee (page 4, para 1)

• That is they should either keep a copy of the employee’s passport, or
• A document confirming applicants NI Number and Birth Certificate or
• Certificate of Registration or Naturalisation and a letter from the Home Office or
• A work Permit and Letter from Home Office or endorsed passport

Whilst this may help the government cut out illegal working, it discriminates against all those trans people who do not yet have passports
